Schiano Turns to Cignetti Fix Rutgers Offense

If Rutgers coach Greg Schiano was baffled about his offense final season, envision how starting center Howard Barbieri felt.
The Scarlet Knights had
one ofthe worst offenses inthe nation final period, butthey may have led the big Eastin players taking snaps. There were the quarterbacks, Chas Dodd and Tom Savage. There also had been the receivers operating the Wildcat?package, Jeremy Deering and Mohamed Sanu.
All
those guystaking snaps contributed to ineffectiveness. Rutgers finished the period among the worst ten teams within the nation inrushing yards and complete yards per sport. The Scarlet Knights, who misplacedtheir final six games in a 4-8 season, suffered 61 sacks, 10 morethan any other team within the nation.
?¡ãWe
truly didn?have an identification, Schiano said. We had been a[shot]gun-run group, we had been a ?Pistol group, we hadbeen a unfold team.
With a coaching-staff overhaulled through the addition ofoffensive coordinator Frank Cignetti, Schiano hopes Rutgers will rediscover theidentity that propelled the program from a doormat to a regular bowl team. Last season?struggles ended Rutgers streak of five consecutive bowls and marked the first time since 2005 thatthe Scarlet Knights won less than 8 video games.
Rutgers
as soon as was the program of tailback Ray Rice and fullback BrianLeonard, but the ScarletKnights misplaced their way when they started toying with a spread offense.
On paper,
it may have created feeling. Savage was a four-star recruit and claimed the starting quarterback job as a true freshman early inthe 2009 period, and with Sanu, Deering and Mark Harrison,Rutgers appeared to have oneof the best receiver groups within the Large East.
1 issue: Sanu and Deering ended up spending a bulk of their time operating the Wildcat, rushing a mixed136 times; they mixed for 60 receptions. By the end of the season, Sanu stated he was defeat upall over. That meant one of Rutgers greatest offensive players touched the ball only 22 occasions from scrimmage in the last 6 video games with the year.
Sanu
challenge wasn? determining where he needed to be. It was fatigue borne of running a route on one play, then taking a snap on the next.
usually realized where I had to be, Sanu said. You would have to be considered a ?Wildcat after which youneed to run a route at aparticular depth. Occasionally you neglect some thing becausethe tempo has changed
Under Cignetti, though, Rutgers has gone back to its roots. Sanu and quarterback ChasDodd, who started seven of the final 8 games last period, stated the Wildcat did not make an appearance at spring apply this yr.
